Does anyone know how a person of little means is supposed to get legal representation these days.
All the solicitors seem to do is accident claims and nobody seems to offer legal aid any more.

It's for my son who has no income except his disability benefits.

Any help most welcome.

Hi Pixie

I do not know the answer to your question exactly but when we started the claim against the MOD for Dom we were told to look at our household insurance.  Under your uninsured loss section if you took it out there should be an amount usually around about 50K which should stand you in good stead to go to a solicitor for them to do the first work to see if you have a case (that will come to fruition).

Once they believe they will win then usually they will monitor costs and hopefully you win and the other side pays costs.

I would look at all your policies first and then speak to a solicitor.  I can give you the phone number of our one if it helps although they are based in Croydon so not practical.

HTH

I'll have a look Speeds, thanks for that. I don't think we're covered though as I think we tried to cut down on the costs last renewal.

When we had the loft converted it went to a five bed house and the insurance shot up so we tried to cut back.

I will route them out though and check.

I've checked and we arn't covered for legal costs.

Thanks for that info though Speeds, that's very useful for any needs in the future and may well be of use to others too.

It's due for renewal in September so I think I will include it then but it won't pay the legal fees at the moment.

We may go down the small claims court road as it's not about money anyway but more about justice.

That is a shame you are not covered Pixie - I know it is not always money but it does take money event o get justice.

Maybe ask the CAB.  Most solicitors also give you a free session to discuss your case.

Thanks Speeds, I've got a solicitor phoning me tomorrow with some advice free of charge.

The CAB is a little difficult to get to for us with our lad home 24/7 and him not being able to tolerate waiting and lots of noise and people. It's right in the heart of town.

If I have to I will use the small claims court but I'll take this solicitors advice first as she said she may know someone who could help.

Getting there slowly but surely. xx
