Children under 16 will get free prescriptions anyway (upto 19 I think if in full time education) but if you just need some Calpol or another med for a common illness you can register for Care at the Chemist.
You ask at the chemist that you are most likely to use regulary and you can ask for whichever med you need on the Care at the Chemist Scheme. (You can only use one chemist at any one particular time but you can change if you want to)
They give you the med free and ask you to sign a form.
There are only certain meds they can give you on this scheme and you may still need to see your GP but most common meds are available.
It can save a fortune over a period of time and save your GP and you time waiting for an appointment.
Anyone on certain benefits can also join the scheme.
Ask at your chemist for more details.
