Prosopagnosia

My son still has this but he manages it much better now.
At one time he didn't even recognise us, his parents, when we re-entered the room.

I used to think I was a bad Mum because he always screamed at me so it was such a relief to know this was really the problem.
He only saw a stranger trying to pick him up and cuddle him and not his Mum or Dad.

He now manages this with voice recognition, clothing, hair style etc.

Here's a couple of links that are interesting.

hi pixie, i have heard something about this before, its quite amazing, it must be so difficult living with this though but so reassuring in a way once you knew exactly what it was your son was suffering from.
