Cuddle hormone to treat autism

for those of you that have not seen this on other forums i found this in yesterdays dDaily Mail and im looking for your opinions on it...

A BRAIN chemical dubbed the cuddle hormone is being used to treat syptoms of autism.
A daily nasal spray based on oxytocin, which regulates emotion and social skills,is being used by adults with autism in a clinical trial at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Autism is a developmental disorder and syptoms include poor social skills, difficulty movements such as rocking or twirling.
some research ahs suggested that low levels of oxytocin may be involved in the development of the condition.
animal studies have found that the hormone plays a role in a variety of behaviours, including social bonding, memory, anxiety reduction and repetive behaviours.
some early results showed that when given intravenously, oxytocin led to rapid deduction in repetitive behaviors.
Researchers believe the new treatment will have beneficial effects on the mood and behaviour of the men and women on the trials.

sounds interesting, but i feel pretty dubious about these trials, but you never know. guess we will have to wait and see what the outcome is.thanks for the info, i must have missed it when i read the mail yesterday.

I had heard about this via a Autism email list I'm on but didn't really take much notice at the time.

I really, really hope it will bring some good results for them as nothing else seems to so far.

I know there are some exceptions for some children, such as GFCF diet and Son Rise etc. but they only seem to help some.

We tried allsorts when ours were younger, as you do, and some things helped but others made no difference at all.

The GFCF diet helped the younger one but was very expensive despite the GP prescribing some of the foods.

Various other diets did nothing.

We were too afraid to try Secretin injections but we did buy Homeopathic Secretin from a place in London. It was cheap too but alas no real difference.

I have my fingers crossed that the trials will prove beneficial with no nasty long term side effects and we can see some improvements for the young people involved.

i remember purchasing some vitamins, cant remember what they were from someone in the usa for my daughter when she was little, everyone said they were a wonder drug, alas they had no effect at all, and i am very scepital of all these new trials and ideas. having two autistic children i have found over the years that entering their world instead of expecting them to enter ours is by far the best option, as for the some of the twirling and odd body movements they just get replaced every now and again with something new, and one behaviour that sometimes seems endless and difficult to handle also diminishes and gets replaced by a new one. oh yes they are challenging children, but find me one who isnt !!!
