New

Hello,
this is the first forum I have ever joined, I am not currently a carer but cared for my daughter with severe learning difficulties for nearly 42 years untill her sudden death in 2006, I saw some of your posts and could relate  to them, I guess we all share some common experiences with our special people,  love to join in if you will have me.
I admit I still rant about Social Services and lots of other things that I encountered over the years and still keep in contact with many of my daughters friends and their carers.

Hi Annie

Welcome from me and my family.  I am too sorry to hear about your daughter and I hope you will stick around to share your vaulable experience.

How nice that you keep in touch with your daughter's friends.

Enjoy the forum.
Annie

Thank you for the lovely welcoming messages, I am gradually working my way through the posts, happy to share any knowledge I have gained over the years.

I have seen all sorts of changes since 1964 when my daughter was born, on the whole the attitude towards disability has improved immensly but there is still along way to go.

Carers do at least get some help these days but by no means enough and we must do all we can to improve that situation,

Hello Annie I am a newbie as well but have been made really welcome as I am sure you will be. I am carer for my daughter - since the age of 17 when she was disabled through an illness - she will be 33 this yr. You may hear me going on about weddings - this is because she is to marry probably next yr so i will probably bore you all when we start to organise this.
Sorry to hear about your daughter - how sad for you and what a shock it must have been. Hugs  and  xxx to you   Pam

Activitie not started yet Annie as the flats not ready yet - then hubby to be needs to settle himself in first so watch this space. Sam (Nads fiance) coming up on Good friday for a week so we have one or two plans for over the Easter weekend. Not too sure about the Buxton Raceway on Easter Monday though - they have given it to be very cold I believe. Pam

Pam,

meeting the inlaws eh, he is a brave man, enjoy the weekend, the first time myyoungest son in law visited Julie had a strop about something and he nearly ran out. He grew to love her though and spoilt her shamelessly.

Sam has been before several times Annie - we get on very well. Nad also goes down to his home and both sams mum and I take over the care they need when we have them so it works quite well. Only one strop as yet - from sam - well more of a panic really - lolol because we didnt take his wipes with us when we played taxi into town for them. Nad and sam compliment each other I'm pleased she has chosen him as we have had a rough ride with nad at times she's had some right fellas.   Pam

Pam ;
it is great that you all get on so well, I have two lovely sons in law, the only boy friend Julie ever claimed was a carer  from Day Services that she adored, I still hear from him bless him.  Her more able friends have their boy friends though, it is quite amusing to watch the interactions. Mind ou you have to keep up with whose who or put your foot right in it. I had all the usual stresses from the other two girls and their strange boy friends  but neventually they both settled on nice lads,

Annie I know  just where you are coming from. I think with nad it was because she was so ill from 16/17yrs even needing a lightwriter to speak for her that she 'missed' those teenage yrs. It's taken years for her to recover to how she is now and a couple of yrs ago we suddenly had this teenager in our midst.   Drove me crackers she did (at 30) we had daily domestics   which in a way was good because she had got her speech back and we were 'able' to have the 'verble' So when she got together with sam last yr (who she has known off and on over 11 yrs) I was so pleased. Someone decent if you know what I mean?
Putting your foot in it!!   We do that with the youngest one  who by the way is 31yrs!!!  I called her latest the wrong name over Christmas it's a good job he had a sense of humour.     Pam

Pam,
i think your daughter has done remarkably well and deserves a brilliant future, it makes all the heartache worthwhile when something brilliant happens,

Oops foot in it, just tell them it was a senior moment if you do it again. Might work, you never know.

Just seen the weekend forecast, it doesn't look very good for out door activities so best of luck there.

My daughter is of to Norfolk but I think I will huddle in the warm if it is that bad

Not too sure that we will go to Buxton either. Its very bleak up there in winter well not so much winter is it - and the raceway is very high up out on the Leek road sooooo we will see on that one. Going to see The other Boleyn tomorrow night then out for the birthday meal on Saturday night.  Rest of the time I may do like you and snuggle up in the warm.  Pam
