Hi Pixie
We do not and this is why
1. Restricted mileage
2. We like to keep our cars for longer than 3 years especially if we like it
3. The deposit you pay is non refundable - so if you chose a car out of the nil band (except your DLA that is) then you have to pay an amount to secure the car
These are our cons but we have nbot had a motability car ourselves

Thanks for that Speeds, someone else said something similar.
I'll pass the info onto the lady who was asking.

I totally disagree with speeds (sorry). I am disabled and I have a motability car and it is the best thing I ever did. I am currently on my 4th car so have been using them for almost 12 years. The mileage allowance is huge - 12,1000 a year, its brilliant to exchange it every three years and there are literally LOADS of cars that need no up front deposit! AND the rules re fair wear and tear damage are so relaxed now that there is never a need for an insurance claim if, eg, someone keys the car.
I think its an absolutely brilliant scheme and I'd be totally lost without it as I cannot afford to run a car and cannot walk far enough to use public transport.
The allowance I would receive if I didn't have the car would no WAY pay for a personal car or taxis.
I get the car taxed free, insured free, maintained free, free AA (or it might be RAC) membership. All it costs me is my petrol.
GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont understand the bit about paying something to secure the car. Its not true. I have always chosen cars with nil deposit and have never had to part with a penny. There is no such thing as a payment to secure a car on nil deposit.
Its a brilliant scheme, very very simple, the garage does everything for you.

I've never had a motability car so I can't comment, hence my reasons for asking here.
I could have had one but we decided at the time that we needed the DLA more as the kids were still young and there were other things that we needed the money for.
Thanks for all the advice. I have passed this on to the lady who asked me about it (unidentified of course) and several other replies from other forums I'm on.

Hi Shorty
That is fine. I put our cons as for us we always have large cars - not usually ones under motability's nil rate band. I did not say there was a need to have money to secure a car on nil rate. I said if you chose a car out of nil rate then you have to pay a non refundable deposit to secure the car. OK you can call us picky but the range of cars in nil rate do not suit our car choices.
Our current cars are an Audi A3 and a Merc 320 CDI estate. 12,000 miles a year is not enough for us - my husband (who is a wheelchair user since 1994) drove 14,000 miles last year according to his MOT so that is why the mileage is not enough. I also drove around 10,000 or so miles in the Merc and we also have a third car which I drove a couple of thousand miles in
Car Tax free applies even if you do not use motability - so that is not an issue
Our insurance is very cheap anyway as we have loads of no claims.
Servicing is part of motability but we took the attitude that we always used to have our cars serviced so we saw no net loss for us. My husband is lucky to be able to work full time and earns a good salary albeit a lot less than if he had not had his accident. The other thing is we had 2 cars before Dom's accident so have 2 cars now - so things did not change with the exception of now having automatics rather than manual cars.
My husband finds that once he likes a car he likes to keep it - hence the Audi which will be 8 years old on 12-Nov will sadly be going although to be replaced with a BMW 320 coupe. We will keep that car for at least 5 if not more years.
I am not knocking motability - I merely pointed out the cons for us and why. They are true for everyone as they are facts.
I am pleased motability works for you. I agree it is a good scheme - just that it is not one for us at the moment - that could change in the future - perhaps when Dom is not working and we do less miles. Until very recently BMW were not even part of the scheme amd we like our beamers. This will be our first brand new beamer . Our next car after this one will be either a Grand Voyager as we need a vehicle to allow space for the 3 of us, 2 big dogs and also an electric and manual wheelchair.

Just thought I had better back up my facts.
Dom wanted and is getting next week a new BMW 320dM sport Coupe.
If we bought this under motability we would have to pay a non refundable deposit of
Category Manufacturer Model Description Fuel Transmission Advance Payment Weekly Rental Avg. Mpg CO2 Lease Term
Coupe/Convertible BMW 320d M Sport 2d Coupe AT MP Diesel Automatic £6999.00 T/A 51.40 145 g/km 3 yrs
£6,999 - sorry the table looks rubbish.
For the Grand Voyage (my son gets higher rate DLA so we could have two motability cars) the deposit (non refundable) would be MPV Chrysler GrVoyager 2.8CRD Exec XS AT MP Diesel Automatic £8858.00 T/A 33.20 225 g/km 3 yrs
£8858.00
Have just also checked that it is now 45,000 miles over 3 years so the mileage has gone up but still too close for comfort for us.

fair enough, speeds, I can appreciate that its not for everyone and if you need a bigger model than basic then yes, there is money to pay up front .... our differents views probably go to show that there is no one right answer for all xx
