UK Disability Resource of Disabled Needs

You were all there when I was born,
all eager to see the new addition.
Lots of faces peering down at me,
sounds I'd never heard before.

It was hard to understand,
I didn't feel the same as you,
things didn't make sense to me.

I was scared of everything, including you
because you were loud or laughed
or just because you were too close.

I went to school, horrible place.
You weren't there, I don't know why.
I was scared and cried a lot, all alone
but I still had to go.

All the other faces I had learnt to know
were never there any more.
The one's I called Nanna or Aunty or Grandad.
I knew I was different but they used to visit.

Where are you now?

You missed my schooling, I'm leaving soon.
You missed the bad bits
but there has been some good bits too.
I'm quite clever with a computer,
I do well with Math and English too.

I still find making friends too hard
but I have friends online instead.
Sleep and eating is still quite difficult
but I do try new things now
and I sleep in my own room too.

It is so long since you visited
I wouldn't know your face anymore
Are you still called Nanna or Aunty or Grandad
or has that changed too.
