Medics have removed a pencil from inside a woman's head - 55 years after it got stuck.
Margret Wegner, 59, fell while carrying the pencil at the age of four.
"It went right through my skin - and disappeared into my head," she said.
As a result, Wegner has suffered headaches and nosebleeds for most of her life.
The pencil narrowly missed vital parts of her brain but at the time no-one dared operate.
However, now technology has improved sufficiently for doctors to be able to remove it.
The majority of the pencil, some 8cm, was taken out during surgery in a private Berlin clinic.
But the 2cm tip had become too embedded to remove.
